One man bird… or not…
Always introduce people that visit
Always supervise guests with your bird
Get them to take off hats and scary jewelery
Encourage visitors to talk to your bird
Let family members handle your parrot from the start
One — person birds are unfortunately created by us humans.
Screaming.. the things you dont do.
Do not scream back
Do not squirt them with water
Do not cover them up
Do not tap their beak
Do not flick their beak
Resist at all costs picking up your bird.
Naughty words and noises.
do not teach bad words or bad noises
Ignore any bad words and noises that your bird may pick up
Praise every good word
Bad noises often go away by themselves
Find words that sound like the bad word and substitute, then repeat
Biting… What to watch for.
Pinning of the eyes
A very erect stance
Feathers held tightly closed against the body
Feather fluffing
Tail fanning.. but this only in some species
Plucking…reasons.
Being bored
being housed incorrectly
Fear of something in their enviroment
A poor diet
Illness
Mites
Improper lighting
Not being bathed regularly
Changes in the home or family
A bad wing clip
Helping the plucker.
Make sure the diet is correct… Cereal, nuts, seeds, fruit, and vegetables.
Play with the plucker… plenty of one-on-one time
Give him lots to chew and rip up… paper, card, material
Put lots of branches in his cage for him to chew
Use a collar if you absolutely have to.
PLEASE DONT GET ANOTHER BIRD AS A COMPANION BECAUSE YOUR BIRD IS PLUCKING…
A lot of this has been covered in blogs gone by, it is always good to refresh our memories.
You and your feathered friend have a good week
Warm regards
Beryl
